John Defterios is the host of ‘CNN Marketplace Middle East’, a weekly business programme dedicated to the latest financial news and figures from across the Middle Eastern region. Defterios is an expert on Middle Eastern business, with more than 20 years editorial experience of business and current affairs. He rejoined CNN in 2007 to take up the new role presenting ‘CNN Marketplace Middle East’ having worked as an anchor and correspondent for the network from 1992 until 2000, including anchoring the London-based business show, ‘World Business Today’. As a journalist, Defterios brings more than two decades of news experience having covered some of the biggest stories of the century. These include the Gulf War, the Fall of the Berlin Wall, the World Trade Centre Bombings, the LA Riots and G8 summits. In addition to his work as a broadcaster, Defterios has been a World Economic Forum media leader since 1995. Before first joining CNN, Defterios worked for Reuters from 1988 until 1992 in a joint-venture with PBS Television as special series producer, European Correspondent and West Coast Correspondent. His first major career break came as Capitol Hill Producer of ‘Nightly Business Report’ in Washington DC. Defterios has travelled extensively for his journalism in Europe, the Middle East, South and Central Asia, the Far East and Africa. He has received numerous awards for his journalism, including a Telly Award for best business series, a Gran Prix Italia for best business programme, Associated Press Awards for Special Series and for sports broadcasting. He graduated from the University of Southern California with a BA in Journalism and Economics in 1984, obtaining his first job in TV as a CNN intern. |
