Margaret graduated with highest distinction from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in Foreign Affairs and Middle East studies and a minor in Arabic.

As a Fulbright-Hayes Scholar, she also studied Arabic at Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan. In 2007 Brennan was awarded a George Mitchell Fellowship and made a Whitehead Fellow with the Foreign Policy association. In 2003, she was named one of the top journalists under the age of 30 by the NewsBios/TJFR Group.
