Ambassador Conrad is Special Envoy and Ambassador for Environment and Climate Change for Papua New Guinea and founding Director of the Coalition for Rainforest Nations, an intergovernmental initiative involving over 40 developing nations. His efforts focus upon the development of proactive strategies toward climate stability, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development in developing countries.

 

In this role, Amb. Conrad launched the initiative within the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) now widely referred to as REDD-plus: 'Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks.' He is a lead negotiator for the G77 & China focused on development, climate, and forests.

 

Amb. Conrad was instrumental in the design and establishment of the World Bank’s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility and the United Nations UN-REDD Programme, currently serving on the Participants Committee and the Policy Board of each respectively. Amb. Conrad also serves on the Global Agenda Council on Ecosystems and Biodiversity Loss for the World Economic Forum..

 

In 2009, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) named Amb. Conrad a 'Champion of the Earth' for Policy Leadership along with Erik Solheim, Minister of Environment and International Development of Norway. In 2008, TIME Magazine named him #1 in the "Leaders & Visionaries" category within its annual list of "Heroes of the Environment". Amb.

 

Conrad’s past experience is investment banking and operational experience in the both industrial and emerging markets working in agriculture, energy, sea foods, telecommunications, and textiles. He has worked for and advised numerous international companies related to global strategy, international investment, and strategic alliances.

 

 Amb. Conrad was raised in Papua New Guinea and subsequently earned a BS from the University of Southern California and MBAs from both Columbia Business School and the London Business School – receiving the ‘Distinguished Service Award.’
