Jeffrey Nugent,

Jeffrey B. Nugent is Professor of Economics at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, California. His teaching and research specialty is the Economics of Developing Countries. Within this field he has worked in and on various countries of Latin America, sub-Sahara Africa and South and East Asia. However, in recent years he has been focusing on the Middle East and North Africa Region. Professor Nugent has worked on a wide variety of substantive issues, ranging from agriculture to manufacturing and services and the fertility, labor force participation, and other behavior of households, often focusing on institutional mechanisms and issues. These include evaluation of the role of business associations and the usefulness of the various services they provide, the relative importance of various barriers to doing business and the political economy of reforms with respect to labor and trade regulations, licensing and corruption, and the effects of old age security programs.

 

Professor Nugent received his BA from Amherst College and his MA and PhD degrees from The New School University. He has published well over 100 papers in refereed journals and authored or edited a number of books. He has won numerous awards and prizes for his research, including most recently from the Western Economic Association and the Journal of Development Studies. He participates in numerous economics associations and serves on the editorial boards of several economics journals, especially those focusing on the economies of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. For example he is on the Board of Directors and a past president of the Middle East Economic Association.

 

Aside from his work as a university professor at USC, Professor Nugent has worked with the World Bank, the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the International Labor Office. He is affiliated with IZA, the Economic Research Forum, and other research institutions and has for years served as the US representative to the Economics Structure Section of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC). He has also taught or researched at UCLA, the University of Barcelona, University of Rome, the Korea Development Institute, University of Toulouse, the National Planning Institute of Ecuador.
